By BRAD PERRY “THE Riverland, is that near the Barossa?” came the response to my answer. Last month I ventured to Sydney, a place with a reputation for serving top class food and wine and whilst there I often was asked where I was from. Should I have been surprised by the puzzled looks I received when I told the Sydney public I was from the Riverland? The Riverland prides itself on producing high class wine, the premium stuff, and our growers pour their hearts and souls into making it. Restaurants, resorts, hotels, tourist locations, noone knew the Riverland. In fact Sydney residents did not even know what state the Riverland is in. Once I had told them it was in South Australia, I had to revert to pointing out the Riverland is three hours drive from Adelaide. “I have been to Glenelg,” a waitress said, waiting for me to respond by saying “it's not far from there”. While on holiday, I went into bat for the Riverland and proceeded to ask why Riverland wines did not make the wine list on most of the well known restaurants in Sydney. South Australian product featured on the wine list at celebrity chef Matt Moran's Aria restaurant but surprise, surprise, the majority of the drops were from the Barossa.
