Oh, hear the mighty roar - Lyrup wins Independent premiership

FROM wooden spooners last season, Lyrup made the best possible turn around beating East Murray for the Independent competition’s premiership last
Saturday.

In windy, rainy conditions, Lyrup shrugged off East Murray midway through the third quarter to run out winners.

Two time premiership coach Sam Lloyd said there was jubilation from the players and club supporters when the final siren sounded.

“It was a big relief because we went in the hard way,” he said, referring to the minor premier’s loss in the second semi-final.

“Quite a few people doubted us but amongst ourselves we knew we could do it if we put in a proper performance.

“It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose in football, there are still a lot of people who do a lot of work behind the scenes on the committee.

“It’s a way players can reward them by giving them a bit of success.”

After an even first quarter, Lyrup went into the main break with a five point advantage and Lloyd said he told his players to keep doing what they do best.

“I told them just keep their head over the ball and keep winning contested football and if we would stick to our processes, we thought we would eventually get the win,” he said.

East Murray’s Justin Andriske booted the first goal against the breeze in the third quarter.
