Water smart ways to stay

Berri Native Plants owner Andrew Walladge believes many gardeners will stay water smart despite the lifting of water restrictions in December.

By LES PEARSON MOST gardeners will stick to their water efficient ways despite the lifting of water restrictions according to local plant experts. Berri Native Plants owner Andrew Walladge said hundreds of residents have adjusted their gardens to be more water efficient and will stay that way despite the restrictions no longer applying come December. “So many people have spent a lot of money setting up their gardens right and doing the right thing,” he said. “I reckon if they go from drippers back to sprinklers, it really is a massive backwards step. “I would liken it to smoking in public places, it is really considered socially irresponsible now. “Water is also costing us more, so no one in their right mind would put sprinklers back on.” He hoped the decision was not made on one year of reasonable rainfall. “Our rainfall zone and the state of the river is not going to go away after just 12 months,” he said. However, Mr Walladge saw some merit in the change. “Removing watering times will be of benefit as it will be far more convenient for people,” he said. Waikerie gardener Don Webster is known throughout the town for his impressive garden, receiving six KESAB awards and nine local awards for his efforts.
