Making the cut

By LES PEARSON A GROUP of Riverland students are looking to make the cut as they pursue a career in the meat industry. Local butchers are being encouraged to indicate their interest in taking on school based apprentices after the new training program was officially launched last week at the Loxton Meatworks. William Angliss TAFE teacher Trevor Eden said the course has been successfully introduced into several other rural areas to address the skills shortage in the trade. Mr Eden said the meat processing (or retailing) school based apprenticeship is an excellent way for interested students to get a taste of the industry. “The whole concept of today’s launch is to get the word out to the to schools to interested students who may not have heard about this opportunity,” he said. Students from Loxton, Renmark, Glossop and Waikerie high schools spend one day a week on site in the boning room, being taught the ins and outs of butchery. The program teaches the same competencies as a regular apprenticeship, while allowing the students to continue with their schooling. It also counts towards the students’ South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). “It really suits someone who is a hands-on individual,” he said.
